My Spouse Won't Talk About It

While people differ quite a bit in terms of how generally talkative they are, sometimes a specific topic emerges that makes a spouse uncharacteristically silent. This silence may even spread across the whole marriage.

What can you do when your spouse just won’t talk about something? This worksheet, and the companion podcast, will give you some ideas.

Look for potential concerns your spouse might have. Read down the following list. For each explanation that you think might be true for your spouse, write a how or what question you could use to open the door. HINT: It is essential here that you write questions in a tone that is asking for information, not seeking to prove a point!

Now it’s time to think about what you can do to help make it easier to reconnect. Reflect on how you could do each of these, what would be challenging, and how you could meet those challenges.
